Known Case Conference – Thoracic Radiographs

9 Oct

Patient data: 1,5-year-old, spayed female DSH cat

History: dyspnea

Technique: thoracic radiographs

Thoracic radiographs show a severe, diffuse, mixed bronchial to interstitial pulmonary pattern in all lung lobes with peri-bronchial cuffing. The cardiovascular and the extra-thoracic structures are within normal limits.

Differential diagnoses include feline asthma, parasitic pneumonia (Aelurostrongylus species, Eucoleus species, Filaroides species and Dirofilaria immitis), neoplasia (such as diffuse bronchogenic adenocarcinoma) or idiopathic feline pulmonary fibrosis.

Percutaneous ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of the sonographically affected lung parenchyma shows the presence of larvated eggs of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus.

The cat was treated with fenbendazole for two weeks. The thoracic radiographic study was performed after one month with improvement of the pulmonary pattern.
